Happy New Year Everyone!

If you would like to start off the New Year by reaching out to others in need, here’s your chance.  We really need your help!   

Please join our energetic, dedicated teams for one or more of the below-listed sessions (the more the better of course!).  A couple of hours of your time can truly make a difference to others…and be enjoyable too!   No experience is necessary of course.

Daily Bread Food Pantry: man the Pantry as needy clients shop.В  Shir Shalom volunteers are responsible for the dates below:

  • Monday, September 24, 9:30 a.m. – 11: 45 a.m. (PRIORITY!)
  • Monday,В OctoberВ 29th, 9:30 a.m.В – 11:45В a.m.
  • Friday, November 30th, 9:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Also, during the entire month of October, the Pantry we will need many more hands on deck on Monday and Friday mornings from 9:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. to help clients fill out brief/simple annual registration forms and to give out tickets for our  Thanksgiving food distribution event.   Please let us know if/when you can help.  The Pantry would be so grateful to you! 

  1. Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen: prep and serve a meal to hungry clientswith Shir Shalom volunteers and our partner church teams.

SYNOPSIS
Leningrad, 1970. A group of young Soviet Jews who were denied exit visas, plots to “hijack” an
empty plane and escape the USSR.
It started as a fantasy, Operation Wedding, as outrageous as it was simple: Under the disguise of a trip to a
local family wedding, the hijackers would buy every ticket on a small 12-seater plane, so there would be no
passengers but them, no innocents in harm’s way. The group’s pilot would take over the controls and fly
the 16 runaways into the sky, over the Soviet border, on to Sweden, bound for Israel.
Caught by the KGB a few steps from boarding, they were sentenced to years in the gulag and two
were sentenced to death; they never got on a plane.
While the Soviet press writes “the criminals received their punishment”, tens of thousands of people in the
free world demand “Let My People Go!“ and as the Iron Curtain opens a crack for 300,000 Soviets Jews
wanting to flee, the group members are held back to pay the price of freedom for everyone else.
45 years later, filmmaker Anat Zalmanson-Kuznetsov reveals the compelling story of her parents,
leading characters of the group, “heroes” in the West but “terrorists” in Russia, even today.
Anat and her mother Sylva, retrace the group’s journey from a Soviet airport to a KGB prison.
Cigarettes and vodka fuel interviews with the parents filled with intelligence and humor. Archives,
reenactments and interviews with KGB officers enhance this inspiring story of young Jews who imagined
freedom and cracked the Iron Curtain

Save The Date! Sunday, May 7 is Mitzvah Day!

Each spring, over 150 congregants and friends of all ages gather to participate in a variety ofВ MitzvahВ (good deed) projects at Congregation Shir Shalom and off-site area agencies. On this single day, we stock local food pantries, collect children’s books, knit hats for newborns and preemies, wash windows at senior residences, prepare meals for the homeless, and more. We conclude this amazing day of community spirit with a party for our volunteers, including a slideshow celebrating their accomplishments. В 

The Mitzvah Day Committee is hard at work planning an amazing day of service. We are currently seeking volunteers to help with set-up and take-down. If you’d like to help, email Debbie Lavin.В Click here to email Debbie.
